Olympic Weekend

With each new city the Navy brings us to, Bobby and I create a list of must-do things or must-visit places that we work to accomplish before we're being moved again. Unfortunately the first half of our stay here in Whidbey was mostly made up of deployments so we've been forced to cram everything into 2010. That being said, a couple of weeks ago we made the easy two hour drive up to Vancouver for the weekend - dogs in tow.

The Olympics had just finished up the week before so we were happy to see hotel prices drop from $900 closer to $90. Although we weren't there to witness any of sporting events, the torch was still lit and pretty cool to see.

From the Olympic torch to the Olympic rings... The weather wasn't all that great (cold and gray) but it wasn't raining so we were happy to hike around Stanley Park for a few hours and see the same rings we'd seen so many days before on TV.

City Skyline...

Lots of Totem Poles...

The dogs had a lot to take in during our hike around the park. Wrigley tried to show the horses how tough he was...

Gracie was not a fan of this statue. The second she saw it she started barking at it and jumping on the base...

Can you guess what's on the other side of the bridge?

Lots of birds and ducks to keep them going crazy the entire time.

We were pretty cold and tired so we decided to head to the hotel for a while. Luckily many hotel chains now not only accept dogs, but provide doggy beds, bowls, and treats. Spoiled much? Although they enjoyed those things, Gracie was the happiest to doggy-watch from our floor to ceiling windows.

After a quick nap we walked around down Robson street in downtown and found and Irish pub with outdoor seating... Does bringing your dogs to a bar make you an alcoholic or a really good dog owner?

Later that night we had an awesome dinner (lots of oysters and other seafood) at the Blue Water Cafe in Yaletown. I forgot my camera that night but snagged a picture off of their website.

If you ever go to Vancouver, definitely make a stop in Yaletown. It's a really cool couple of blocks made up of warehouses that were restored into stores and restaurants. Anyways, after dinner we met up with one of Bobby's Cal friends, Scott. We saw him at our wedding a few months prior but didn't get much of a chance to talk so it was great to catch up. Not only is Scott a fun guy to hang out with, he also happens to be a Canadian Olympian who won a silver medal in the last summer games and ran a leg of the Olympic torch relay this year! That celeb status comes in handy when trying to get the coveted Maple Leaf Olympic mittens that were in huge demand over the games. Scott got us each a pair! Woohoo! I can't wait to sport them on the US Navy base next winter. ;)

The next day we were pretty wiped out but I wanted to check out the Granville Island market before we made our trip back home. I didn't know much about it but had just been told it was much like Pike Place Market in Seattle. Maybe it was because we'd been outside in the gray and rainy weather for the past two days, but this market was like walking into Oz. I felt like Dorothy skipping down the yellow brick road in and around the aisles of produce. (I don't think Bobby had quite the same reaction.)

Overall it was a really great trip and an awesome city. The next time we go back, though, we'll definitely be going in the summer and leaving the dogs at home.
